World Surfing Games Head to Costa Rica

Surfing is a sport that’s simply made for certain places, and Costa Rica in general and Playa Hermosa specifically would be at or near the top of anyone’s list who understands the sport and the conditions that provide the best surfing experience. That’s one of the many reasons that Playa Hermosa has been chosen as the location for the ISA World Surfing Games set to be held from August 1st through August 8th of 2009.

The tournament will combine the true international flavor and camaraderie of surfing with the unique elements of beauty and wonder that is Costa Rica and its towns and beaches. In terms of the event, the ISA World Surfing Games date back to their original run in 1964, and this year is expected to be the largest surfing tournament ever held in this part of the world.

For eight days, the best surfers on the planet will combine into teams representing their respective countries and compete for point totals towards the overall title. Each team will consist of four open men, two open women and two longboarders. Their points will all count towards their team’s total, and a champion will be crowned on the final day of the tournament. Past winners include teams from Australia, Portugal, Ecuador and the United States, among others.

This year’s event is expected to be remarkable for many reasons, as the talent of the surfers will combine with the waves of Playa Hermosa which are renowned for their strength and consistency. The water is warm at this time of year, and the calendar shows us that this week presents one of the best for overall surfing conditions.

Aside from seeing some of the best surfers in the world compete in an event that truly features sportsmanship, visitors and spectators will be able to take in all that Playa Hermosa has to offer as well as nearby destinations that will provide them with a flavor of the essence of life in Costa Rica.

Playa Hermosa also sits near the famous surfing town of Jacó, which in and of itself is an attraction worth any visitor’s time to see. Not only can one get to Jacó within minutes and enjoy the surf on their own, but there are several small-town activities and events that are sure to provide those who come with an unforgettable experience. Additionally, visitors will find several options for food and especially lodging in Jacó, including the Best Western at Jacó Beach Resort, which is a resort known around the world for its hospitality, wondrous views and high-end rooms.
