ONE of the keys to a successful educational vacation is to pick a place where children can forget they have been set up to learn. Try to choose a region with a lot of recreation choices (beaches, bike paths, hiking trails) in addition to culture so they can exercise their bodies and not just their brains.

At the very least, stay at a hotel with a nice swimming pool.

Teach your kids to become young naturalists at Manuel Antonio National Park, a rain forest with mangroves, swimming beaches, howler monkeys and black iguanas. A naturalist guide can explain the vegetation and exotic species. Try a boat trip through the Terraba Mangrove Forest, filled with river turtles and crocodiles, or visit Corcovado National Park, called by National Geographic “the most biologically intense place on earth.” But don’t go without a guide; it has big cats.
