As a tourist, planning the trip and finding the right places to go can be difficult. Determining how long to go for, what to pack and what to see is challenging. Below is a list of the top 5 worst tourist mistakes Costa Rican visitors make when planning their trip:
# 5. Trying To Do Too Much – Travel time in Costa Rica will take a lot out of your trip due to the bending and curving roads and some less than perfect highways. There are many captivating sights and wild adventures to be had; however trying to do too much in a very small time frame will only cause stress and frustration. If your vacation is for eight days, try seeing two or three sights at the most.
#4. Doing Too Little – To sit in one location, hotel or resort for an entire vacation is a mistake, especially if you have a lot of vacation time. An unforgettable vacation consists of a balance between adventure and relaxation, and Costa Rica is a hot spot for both! If you do too little, you may leave the country with regrets, wishing you had planned a little more.
#3. Packing The Wrong Stuff – Costa Rica is a tropical rain forest- which means it RAINS! If you intend to travel outside of Guanacaste, then light raingear is ideal (long sleeved shirt, pants, light jacket). Many visitors only pack a couple of t-shirts, some shorts and a swimsuit; however if you want to see more than the resort you should prepare for at least some light rain.
#2. Visiting For Too Short A Period – There is so much to see and do in this country, and unless you intend to relax at a resort for a short stay, visiting for at least 8 nights is ideal. Jet lag and travelling can take up to two days of your vacation, and travel time between sights or adventures will seem to shorten your vacation as well. Add some sick days from work and extend your vacation if you can!
#1. Assuming All-Inclusive Is The Way to Go – Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are all great places to stay at an all inclusive resort, however Costa Rica has too much to offer to be stationary. There are certainly some great resorts here, although ‘the real’ Costa Rica, the jungles, the different beaches and the city, are worth exploring. Costa Rica very safe when compared to the Dominican Republic, Mexico or Jamaica, therefore never leaving an all-inclusive resort is not necessary. In addition, it is a common myth that by staying at an all inclusive resort you will save money. Food in Costa Rica can be very inexpensive if you are willing to find new places and try new things.

I agree with number 1(all of them really) We vacation there often and I find I get bored at the resort. This last time we stayed at father n laws condo and bought our own food. Fresh produce off the truck is a great way to go. What would have normally cost us $20 plus dollars here in the states for fresh(organic) produce was only about $6 dollars there. We got a lot of fruit!! The resorts are nice but it was great to eat on our own time. We’ve also rented cars in the past and have explored on our own!! Costa Rica is by far way better then Mexico! Pura Vida!
