In The Path of the Tapir

Did you know that you live in the Path of the Tapir Biological Corridor? Did you know that the Path of the Tapir is one of the most biologically diverse places not only in Costa Rica, but also on Earth? Did you know that, unlike most other protected areas, the Path of the Tapir is actually improving biologically? But while things are relatively good here, future threats loom, and we must be vigilant to conserve our unique home.

The function of any biological corridor – including the Path of the Tapir – is to physically connect remote areas of particular biological importance so that genetic diversity and ecological health can be maintained. The Path of the Tapir connects the jewel of Costa Rica – the Osa Peninsula – to the Los Santos Forest Reserve in the Talamanca Mountain Range and Manual Antonio National Park. The Corridor stretches from the Térraba River to the Savegre River, and from the Tinamastes Ridge and Coastal Ridge to the ocean. The Path of the Tapir is officially recognized by Costa Rica’s National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) and ASANA is officially recognized as the local steward of the Corridor.

In future columns, we will describe the corridor in more detail, its biological and social importance, the threats it is facing, the work that ASANA is doing to conserve the Path of the Tapir, and what YOU can do to help keep your home wild and beautiful. But for now, we want to give you a couple of “heads up.” First, ASANA has a new Board and we are hoping to take the organization to a whole new level of work and results. And second, we desperately need help – financial (can be tax deductable), material (computer equipment, GPSs, cameras, vehicles), and human (volunteers, proposal writers, organizers, those with marketing experience). So, if you are interested in getting involved in conservation issues here in “your own backyard,” please let us know – all ideas and suggestions welcome.

Keep the Path of the Tapir wild!
