San José To Get Street Numbering

Getting around San José, especially for visitors, will be easier if a plan to number the streets and buildings becomes a reality, changing the current system of directions and landmarks.

On Monday, San José mayor, Johnny Araya, announced an ambitious plan to cost us$1.2 million dollars to place street names and numbers on all buildings and homes in Costa Rica’s major city.

Araya told La Nación that “it (the lack of numbers) is not acceptable in the 21st century”.

In Costa Rica a typical direction is based on references to the landmark, using popular and well known sites like a mall, or major retailer as a reference point, then using 100, 50 and 25 meters to measure a block, half block and quarter block, respectively, with a north/south/east/west heading.
