We recently took to the streets of San Jose and spoke to locals about US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton’s upcoming visit to Costa Rica. Native Costarican, Rosma Jimenez, 71 years old, educated in Hollywood, California during the forties is not just an avid follower of political figures but part of a politically active family. “I won’t go on camera but I will tell you on tape, I just love Hillary, she is very good and I love her husband Bill.”
Many younger Ticos who have a bad taste for politics in general were curiously expectant of the Secretary’s upcoming visit. We caught up with Daniela Linares on camera; “I really hate politics” she said, “but Hillary is coming to talk about security and I think our international cooperation could help a lot.” For not liking politics much Daniela was quite knowledgeable about the details of Mrs. Clinton’s visit.
Daniela represents the average view of what we heard as we asked around. Typically soft spoken about their opinions, Ticos nonetheless are defensive of their national identity. Although the majority of people seemed skeptical and almost unimpressed by the politics, most did in fact, know and care about the issues at hand.
Overall, Costa Rica’s ambiance in the heat of the politics is “tranquilo” and healthy for a democratic Republic of this sophistication and development.
