As someone who travels to Costa Rica at least 12 times per year, I am
thrilled that there is another carrier with direct flights to Costa Rica. Jet Blue has become a recent staple of my domestic travels and now they are offering yet another flight to Costa Rica. The following are my top 4 rankings of my favorite carriers who make direct flights to San Jose, Costa Rica:
1. Taca Airlines (my personal favorite) – Pluses; Low fares, Low business class fares, great service, Direct flights from L.A.
Downside; red-eye only
2. Frontier Airlines – Pluses; Low fares. Downside; red eye from Denver only
3. Continental – Pluses; low fares, low business class fares, multiple daily flights. Downside; route through Houston
4. American - Pluses: multiple daily flights. Downside; route through Dallas
There are actually 22 US cities that have direct flights to Costa Rica. More flights and airlines come online during high season. If you are looking for a great flight combination I recommend www.kyak.com for booking.
Finally, President Oscar Airias announced Costa Rica’s third international airport is scheduled to break ground in 2010. The Sierpe International Airport in the Osa Peninsula will likely be completed in 2013 and that is great news for the local economy and eco-travelers looking to get to the remote Southern Pacific coast.
Pura Vida!

I truly hope the airport in Sierpe never comes to fruition. It’s bad enough they’re improving the roads there. It will truly be the end of Osa as we know it and a very sad, sad day.
