Birds of the air
Our sojourn in some of the wild places of Costa Rica brought us close to many exotic plants and birds, but it also allowed us to visit some old familiar friends. Our flight from New Jersey to San Jose took five hours, but twice each year many of the warblers that breed in New England traverse the same distance. It takes them several weeks, but they use their own tiny wings.

Almost 50 species of wood-warbler occur in Costa Rica. Half of them can be found in New England, and during our trip this winter we saw 10 of those species, most commonly Tennessee, chestnut-sided and black-and-white warbler. The Tennessee warbler migrates through Western Massachusetts in spring and fall; the other two are common breeding residents of our woodland hills.
