Costa Rica has a rich history of excellence in their coffee plantations and celebrated 200 years of coffee production in 2008. Coffee has been the backbone of the Costa Rican economy since the 1850s.
The national government believed in the importance of the coffee bean so much that it’s been called Costa Rica’s Grano de Oro, or grain of gold. This millenary tree’s roots date back to the 10th Century. Costa Rica is the only country in the world which issued an executive order banning the production of any coffee other than Arabica.
Arabica bean coffee is high in antioxidants and offers noted health benefits. People in Japan and the Netherlands who drank Arabica coffees were found to have significantly less incidents of certain cancers than non-Arabica coffee drinkers.
And, there’s more good news for people who like to work out and drink coffee. Caffeine has long been known for its positive affects on exercise. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, enhances the force of muscle contractions, and improves power output. Research has shown that drinking 300-500 milligrams of coffee (about 2-3 cups) one hour before a workout generates the best results. Caffeine also throws a positive punch psychologically; improving mood and making you feel more alert.
So the next time you want a good cup of gourmet coffee that may offer some health benefits too, you may want to choose a rich Arabica blend from Costa Rica.
