Everything from planting trees in a local rainforest reserve to visiting active volcanoes and hot springs was included in the experiences of seven Meigs High School biology students on a recent trip to Costa Rica.
The 10-day trip was arranged by biology teacher Lauren Hardgrove and partially financed by local businesses. The students and their chaperones traveled extensively in Costa Rica, visiting San Jose, La Fortuna, Monteverde, the Central Pacific coast and Sarchi.
They saw many sites that are native only to Costa Rica. In addition to sightseeing and visiting places of historic significance, the students went kayaking, horseback riding and white water rafting, had a folklore evening, visited two local schools where they interacted with the local students, took several nature hikes and spent a full day at the beach where they interacted with the white-faced monkeys.
“This trip was a way for students to learn outside of the classroom. Textbooks could never describe what these students experienced. The trip was truly a once in a lifetime experience for them, and the educational value was worth every penny,” Hardgrove commented.
Students on the trip were Joey Blackston, Alyss Green, Ben Hood, Trinity Kimes, Joey Morgan, Nicki Smith and Cody Williams. They were accompanied by Hardgrove, and chaperones, Curt Hanstine, Jeremy Blackston, and Beatrice Morgan.
