Approximately 15 minutes south of the Quepos airport in Costa Rica, off the Costanera Highway, Portalón is a quiet, hillside community overlooking the long expanse of coastline that stretches from Quepos to Dominical. Photo, Portalon, source here.
The local community is a mix of Costa Rican, European and North American residents and features several mini-supermarket-style convenience stores for basic supplies and a well-stocked liquor store. Local restaurants offer Tico-style cuisine, and a number of local bars and discos provide opportunities for socializing and dancing. Area accommodations range from newly built cabinas to luxury villa rentals.
Quepos is the closest shopping hub, with supermarkets, hardware stores, appliance stores, and other retail outlets, as well as bars featuring live music and dancing. Quepos offers a wide range of tourist activities, and is the gateway to one of Costa Rica’s most popular national parks, Manuel Antonio.

Several beaches are within easy driving distance of Portalón, the closest of which is Matapalo. The nearby Savegre River provides the opportunity for class II, III, and IV rafting adventures.
The principal properties on the market in Portalón are premier homesites and mid-range luxury homes. For example, the Hills of Portalón community offers homesites with impressive ocean views that range in size from 2½ to 2 acres (1.3 to 5 hectares) at elevations of 500 to 1300 feet (152 to 396 meters) with electricity and water from the community’s private water supply.
Portalón is a 3-4-hour drive from San José. Sansa and Nature Air offer several flights daily between Quepos and San José.
