Costa Rica is fast becoming a main destination for medical tourism, as foreigners seek out professional medical attention at a price lower than in their country of origin. The list of services sought out include elective procedures, as well as specialized surgeries.

Medical tourism is a us$60 billion dollar industry worldwide and expected to almost double that to us$100 billion by the year 2025.

And the principal market for Costa Rican medical tourism is the United States and Canada.

Lets take a look at some of the numbers. In the US, some 11.000 people turn 50 years of age daily; almost 50 million Americans do not have a doctor, double that do not have dental coverage and in 2007, 750.000 Americans traveled abroad to obtain medical attention. The expectations are that this year that number will grow to 6 million.

Looking to position itself as the go-to spot for medical tourism, Costa Rica will host the Latin American medical tourism congressional conference for the second year in a row.

The Medical Travel International Business Summit is scheduled for May 2-4, 2011 and will take place in both Hotel Ramada Plaza Herradura in San José and Hotel Hilton Papagayo in Guanacaste. Topics include patient safety, service quality, risk reduction and benefit packages. Ten countries have so far confirmed attendance.

“The idea is to set Costa Rica up to be a leading destination for medical vacations and to offer a platform to encourage development in this sector,” read a press release from PROMED (Advisory for International Promotion of Costa Rican Medicine).

In 2009, 30,000 foreigners traveled to Costa Rica for medical procedures; the most popular of which were dental work and plastic surgery.

The first medical tourism conference, also held in Costa Rica, drew 450 participants.

Many people from the United States and Canada appreciate the unique factors of the Costa Rican medical system. This makes medical tourism in Costa Rica a favorite destination for people who need quality medical care by a board certified plastic surgeon at a fraction of what it costs in North America.

Why Costa Rica for Medial Tourism?
Costa Rica is in Central America and is easily accessible from any city in North America with frequent flights in and out of the country, no passport is required; and, for the first 90 days, no Visa is required. Medical costs are 50% to 70% less than in the United States or Canada, and there is no waiting for surgery.

Most doctors in Costa Rica are trained in the United States, and are considered as well qualified as the top physicians in both the U.S. and Canada. Many are board certified plastic surgeons, but other medical specialists are available as well, and medical standards are just as high as what is expected in North America.

All of the hospitals are certified and accredited by the Joint International Commission (JCI). According to the IRS, the person receiving the service can do so tax free. The tax burden falls to the provider of the service. This can be a great relief for the patient who is worried about the impact such services will have when they file their income tax.

Before visiting Costa Rica, whether for medical treatment, or just to relax, there are things that the North American will not find in Costa Rica. Do not expect blazing fast internet connections. They don’t exist; you will have to be content with dial up which is slow, at best.

El primer Congreso de Bienestar y Medicina Global de Latinoamérica se llevará a cabo este Abril, del 26 al 28 en San José, Costa Rica en el centro de convenciones del Hotel Ramada en Plaza Herradura. Habrá más de 400 participantes, 75 mesas de exhibición y sobre 750 reuniones de negocios en este evento de presentación premier del grupo PROMED.

¿Qué es PROMED? PROMED es El Consejo para la Promoción Internacional de la Medicina de Costa Rica. Es una organización privada sin fines de lucro que asegura la calidad de los servicios que presta la industria de la salud en Costa Rica.
