I just finished a private two-day relocation/retirement tour with a couple from the U.S. The husband has virtually worked all over the world in the military and in the private sector. Presently he is working in the mid-east but plans to retire in a couple of years, so he is scouting possible retirement places overseas. Actually he is only interested in one — Costa Rica.

When he was in the military he was worked in Panama, Nicaragua and Colombia. He fell in love with the region, the people and the culture. He says without a doubt that Costa Rica is the best country in Latin America and where he definitely wants to retire.

Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful places on earth. If the mild climate, friendly people and a fantastic nature, then Costa Rica is a pleasant place to live. Many people find that Costa Rica is the ideal place is to also retire. It is recommended that each test to spend retirement in Costa Rica or a permanent move to Costa Rica time as a tourist. The more often you visit, and the more you stay the best. If you are, it is important that all rules and regulations which are involved in the migration to Costa Rica, explore. Rent a house or an apartment in the areas you feel about your new home is very important. Take time to study the local infrastructure and municipal services to ensure that they meet your needs.

Depending on the country of origin can obtain a tourist visa, which allows you get into the country to three months stay. You can also use an extension that you can stay longer. Again, it is very important that you spend time trying for the country and experience the culture in any place. If you have a valid driver’s license and passport country of origin, you can rent a car to travel the country. But in view of the streets of Costa Rica are to be kept full of potholes and during the rainy season, roads can be impassable. The country has seven different micro-climate of the coastal beaches in the cloud forests, each with their specific living conditions.

The language of Costa Rica is Spanish and it is strongly recommended that you learn the language well before they begin a permanent move. Spanish courses in one of the many schools located near urban centers that do a good job in teaching the Spanish language immersion are available. Leaving the area around the urban centers to find that very few people speak anything other than the local language. Your Costa Rica retirement is much more fun if you know the language. In addition, you should spend time with expatriates in your country of residence. Costa Rica retirement is so popular that it can not find difficult, a group of foreigners who move important information about traveling to Costa Rica.

On my monthly relocation and retirement tours I’m always asked about activities in which Costa Ricans engage. I always make it a point to talk about the lottery or lotería nacional. Don’t get me wrong! I don’t advocate going to a casino and gambling away your hard earned money, because I never do. However, I always explain how the lottery works here, especially after many of my clients notice the vendors selling the tickets on the streets and ask, “What are they selling there?”

The lottery is a part of most Costa Rican’s lives for a long time. Almost every tico I know dreams of striking it rich by winning the big Christmas lottery called EL Gordo Navideño or Premio Mayor (grand prize). There are also weekly lotteries which offer a smaller payoff. The results can be found in the newspapers.

Did you know that if you are middle aged and live in the beautiful country of Costa Rica that you have a greater chance of living to a healthy age of 90+ years than those your age worldwide? And, people who call their home in an area in northwestern Costa Rica live even longer than people in the rest of the country. Why is this possible?

This area is known as a blue zone, places in the world where people live longer and healthier lives than anywhere on earth. Blue zones are also areas where the greatest number of centenarians, those who live 100+ years, can be found. It all comes down to lifestyle. Scientists generally agree that a certain percentage of how long we live is influenced by genetics-how long our grandparents lived. However, the most determining factors in living longer are based on our lifestyle habits day in and day out. Simply stated, these people live lifestyles that include healthy diets, daily exercise, and low stress. They also incorporate family, purpose, meaning, and religion into their daily life.

Looking for a great place to retire that offers enhanced longevity? Costa Rica may be the place for you. Costa Ricans are among the world’s leaders in life expectancy for both men and women. The overall life expectancy in Costa Rica is 79 plus years.

Already known as a country that has a high population of centenarians, Costa Rica offers a lifestyle that promotes healthy living which leads to longer life. One area of Costa Rica, the Nicoyan Peninsula on the Pacific Coast, is known as a blue zone, areas that combine factors that contribute to longer life. Men in this area live to 100 years of age four times more than men living in the United States.

What do these people do to live such long, healthy lives? Although genetics plays a role in longevity, adopting and living a healthy lifestyle is the key to longer life. The basics that researchers have found that seem to connect thosewho live longer are a plant based diet, consistent exercise, a strong commitment to family, and a sense of faith and purpose in life. Costa Ricans fit right into this lifestyle. They are known to be some of the happiest people in the world according to a recent study which is one reason for their longevity. Other contributing factors include their affordable health care system, healthy diet, and stress free lifestyle. There is something uplifting about living in the beautiful country of Costa Rica and foreigners who move there say they never felt better after relocating and feel revitalized. The best news for retirees who move to Costa Rica is that the “golden years” may last longer, with a greater quality of life!

The most common variety of Costa Rican blackberry has the power of antioxidants to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels (fat cells that form in the blood) for those that frequently consume this fruit.

According to a study by the Pharmaceutical Research Institute (Inifar in Spanish) and by the National Center for Food Technology and Science (CITA in Spanish), both from the University of Costa Rica, the blackberry variety Rubus adenotrichum, grown in the Los Santos area, has higher levels of antioxidants than fruits known for these components, like blueberries, grapes, plums, star fruit, or grenadine.

“This variety of Costa Rican blackberry is considered a ´super fruit´, meaning it has powers to protect the body against diseases and improve people´s health. It is very important,” said Ana Mercedes Pérez, food technician at CITA.

For 4 years, 33 researchers have been investigating the components of this blackberry and their effects on people’s health.

There were professionals on the project from various fields, Food Technology, microbiology, Pharmacology, Agriculture, Psychology, Biology, Statistics, and Economics.
