The Central Pacific beach town of Jacó was once a sleepy little village and surfer’s paradise. Although surfboards still abound, the town is sleepy no more. With the new Caldera Highway cutting the journey from San José to just over an hour, this nearest beach destination to the capital has become a booming tourist playground, rife with development, restaurants, bars, retirees, surfers and fun-loving party-goers.

But a short walk down a quiet lane, away from the hullabaloo of town, is a peaceful beachfront haven: the Dutch-owned and -operated Canciones del Mar Boutique Hotel, where, true to the name, you can indeed hear the songs of the sea.

Charming, outgoing owner Peter van Hussen came to Costa Rica in 1981 and bought the hotel 11 years ago. Although high-rise condominiums now dominate the Jacó shoreline, none are visible from this small hotel nestled among palms and lush tropical vegetation.

“We are an eco-friendly contrast to what is happening around us and pride ourselves on being the smallest hotel on the beach, with reasonable rates and excellent, friendly service,” van Hussen says.

Once upon a time, the hotel was an old, run-down establishment, but van Hussen has renovated and redesigned most of it, and added on a totally new section. The four-story building’s cream-colored facade and artificial thatched-palm roof give it an attractive, tropical look. The hotel’s lush, tropical garden is beautifully maintained with an abundance of foliage and colorful flowers, many sporting informative name tags. The large, free-form pool is an inviting place to lead a sloth-like existence, bask in the sun on a lounger, take a nap in the shade or relax with a book.

Big project challenges were the nightly patrols, which were required to protect the adult turtles, since the squatters and some local people illegally poached Olive Ridley Turtle’s nests. This, sadly, is a very common occurrence in the Southern Zone and has had an effect on the country’s marine turtle populations. Sometimes, poaching can reach up to 100% of all hatched turtle babies. It needs to be said that even by natural selection, only one in every thousand turtles every reaches their adult stage. This illustrates the tremendous impact our efforts were about to have.

It’s important that the local population and the authorities get organized to prevent these situations from occurring. The fact that the South Pacific depends heavily on tourism should also be taken into consideration, so we should take care of the natural and human resources that make this area so attractive.

It is important to me to remind you that the illegal establishment of squatting settlements and any commerce with turtle products, such as eggs, are punishable by law. These illegal acts, like the one described above, must be reported to your local city hall or to MINAET (Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Telecommunications). It is also important to expose poaching in different media and community platforms.

Lying in Ballena or Whale Bay, the laidback town of Tambor is located in the south of the Nicoya Peninsula in northern Puntarenas province. Roughly some 20 km south of Paquera and 38 km south of Naranjo, Tambor has a lovely, long, white, sandy beach, ideal for swimming and diving. Situated amidst lush green hills, this town is quite well developed and has its own airport, which is the only local airport in the southern region of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Chosen as the location for Temptation Island 2, a hit Fox TV series, Tambor is now becoming a fast growing tourist travel destination. There are plenty of hotels and resorts found in the area including the Barcelo Playa Tambor Beach Resort, Costa Rica’s first all inclusive resort, and the Los Delfines Golf and Country Club, which has a 9-hole golf course on its premises.

A major attraction of this town is that every year whales migrate from the north to the warm waters of Ballena Bay to mate and give birth amid the abundant marine habitat found here. Bordered by two rocky platforms to the north and south, Tambor beach is protected from ocean swells, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

To get here, it is best to fly into Tambor from San Jose Airport via a domestic flight. However, for those traveling on a strict budget, one can drive or take a bus to Puntarenas city and catch a ferry to Paquera. After that, you have to drive around 45 km to Tambor. This drive, though a little bumpy, is very nice as it offers travelers stunning costal views, and lush green sceneries.

Tambor is also a great place to use as a stop over if you wish to go to Tortuga Island, or if you wish to visit the beautiful and diverse Curu National Wildlife Refuge or Cabo Blanco National Park. With lots of foliage, bird watching is quite popular out here. While for the more active and adventurous, there is plenty of hiking, horseback riding and various water sports to be enjoyed in the area. Plus with some excellent deep sea fishing opportunities and golfing, there is a lot to do out here.
