Close to the equator a small change in altitude creates numerous micro-climates, and since the southern Costa Rica area is very mountainous – that means that about every 20 minutes you can view completely different species of birds.

At sea level, pelicans and frigate birds are very common on the beaches, as well as black sea eagles who love to eat the abundant tiny red crabs. In the deep south of the Osa Peninsula you will also be greeted by the splendid Scarlet Macaw who has made a recent comeback on the beaches of the Corcovado National Park, where they feed on their favorite sea almonds.

As you travel to higher elevations in the South Pacific region, you will find a wide variety of rainforest bird species. One of the richest bird life areas in Costa Rica is from the Baru Reserve to the highlands of Tinamaste village at 3000 ft found on-route to San Isidro / Perez Zeledon. Within this mountain range there have been annual bird counts of over 300 species counted – just during the few days that the bird research walk is conducted!
