Costa Rica has the most beautiful days and nights a nature lover could want. Spectacular nights full of stars, planets, the occasional UFO and of course, our beautiful moon. Keep your eyes open to the horizon to catch the moon rise tonight and you will see how spectacular it is.
Tonight’s full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. At approximately 5o,ooo kilometers closer to us than at any point this year, the wolf moon as it’s called for the howling it provokes will be about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of the year.
The moon appears dramatically larger when it first rises due to the lenticular magnification and filtering capabilities of our gas and water rich atmosphere. When it rises a little in the sky less atmosphere obstructs your view so late night viewing may be the best.
You may also catch a glimpse of a reddish star like Mars as it accompanies the Moon on its left side for a few hours. If you have good binoculars or a telescope you may even see the fabled Costa Rica map on the Moon. Take a great picture and show it off!
The full moon exerts powerful forces on the earth and we can see this in our higher tides during this phase. Some evidence suggests that it affects volcanic lava flows as well as our moods! Many people here have a habit of setting goals and making wishes during the full moon. With this full moon be in the mood for a beach cleanup for the next day as the full moon is notorious for stirring things up a bit.
