An Eco-Friendly Highway?

I was incredibly excited to learn that the Southern part of the $200 million highway project to connect Quepos to Dominical has an Eco-friendly section! Running through the 750 Acre preserve called Hacienda Baru the road that has been in existence for over 40 years is getting an Eco-friendly face lift that will aid to the safety of the local wildlife crossing back and forth.

What impressed me most is that Jack Ewing, one of the partners of this amazing preserve, worked closely with the Ministry of Transportation to build 15 of the Eco tunnels you see in my video.  Additionally they will add as many rope bridges to allow the wildlife to go under or over the road.  While it won’t stop all roadkill from occurring, this gives the animals 30 more opportunities that they would otherwise not have had to move back and forth in their natural habitat.

There is frequently a struggle between development and the environment.  It’s important to not that the road will do a tremendous amount of good for the local people and economy.  You can’t stop progress. You can, However, progress responsibly.

Great that they are doing this. I have been to Hacienda Baru many times; there are a lot of animals there. Especially monkeys, coatis, sloths and anteaters cross that road regularly. It is very cool the government thinks of those guys as well, not just the local people and tourists.

You are right, progress IS responsibility! Southern Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful places in the world! Lets keep it that way. Development is positive as long as it is eco-friendly! This new road is a good example. Thanks for the update!
