It good to talk from our own perspectives, but what should really count is scientific studies regarding obesity in Costa Rica.

http://www.scielo.sa.cr/scielo.php?pid=S0001-60022004000500003&script=sci_arttext

In this article for example, Obesity is regarded as a Public health problem.

On this other it is explained how Obesity indexes are going up in alarming proportions

Costa Rica's diet is high in fat?
As opposed that of that of the American diet; which is comprised of sugary breakfast cereals, fried chicken, and carbohydrates that are breaded soaked in butter and fried in rancid oil. Just a bunch of processed crap, and because the label reads "fat free" It claims territory in your fridge.
Please tell me where you're from... such a place where only leaves and berries are eaten.
..Ok tiger that's enough. You're an idiot, for the most part at least. Costa Ricans do not use lard, you are confusing us with the mexicans. Please, don't charm us. We're allready proud of of soccer team, so there's no need to spoil us.
Lard usage is fairly rare, if at all it's made it's way into your christmas tamales, that was just personal preference.
Name me one place on this earth that hasn't a Mcdonalds and i'll apologize to you. Just because american fast food chains have consumed the cobblestone streets of San Jose does not mean it's cuisine dominates our tastes.
Ticos rather have a home cooked meal of gluten and dairy free goodness, than a zionist cheeseburger, ANY DAY!
Look around, the blind see...
have you ever seen more than a handful of overweight ticos?
alright then, I've got a continent to go conquer..

I'm Costa Rican and as far I know we don't cook our rice and beans with lard. The only time some people may use lard is during Christmas for their tamales but not everybody uses it. I've been living in CA for the last 3 years. I try to cook my brown rice and beans and all the typical Costa Rican dishes too. Although It's true you can find fast food chain restaurants over there but not as many as you can find here. For example I recall 2 McDonalds in Heredia downtown (1 of 7 provinces).
The bottom line is our diet is definitely healthier than the American diet, we consume less dairy, gluten, sodas and processed foods overall.

You are missing the point that when you are on vacation in Costa Rica you are more active than you normally are at home. Costa Rican's diet is high in fat...the beans and rice you are eating were most likely cooked with lard. And the "lack of fast good restaurants" is a total misconception. In the cities, there are KFC, Pizza Huts, Burger Kings, Papa Johns, and many more all over the place.
